About the Chile Drop Event: Musical performances begin at 9pm on December 31, and wrap up at 12:30am on January 1, 2017. The celebration will be held on Downtown Main Street, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and will include a kid’s zone, food and other vendors, beer and wine gardens, and the highlight of the night: a HUGE illuminated chile that will be dropped at the stroke of midnight.
About Project Main Street: Project Mainstreet (PM) all started with showing free movies to the public in La Placita, the tiled walkway on Main Street Downtown, April 2014. Since then PM ballooned into something rather spectacular for the community and is a great example for all volunteers around Las Cruces. Learn more at projectmainstreet.org

7 p.m., New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road. New Mexico Farm & Livestock Bureau is the state’s oldest agricultural membership organization, formed in 1917 to represent food producers across New Mexico. In its 100-year history, NMF&LB has played a pivotal role in helping to conserve land and water, advocating for farmers and ranchers, and advancing the issue of private property rights. Dalene Hodnett, the director of communications for New Mexico Farm & Livestock Bureau, is the speaker for this Culture Series presentation. She has been with the agriculturally oriented membership organization since 2002. She is proud to work for the farmers and ranchers of New Mexico and enjoys telling the story of how food gets from their gate to your plate. Dalene has two masters degrees, one in history, and the other in education, both from New Mexico State University. Free. 522-4100, www.nmfarmandranchmuseum.org.

8 p.m., Las Cruces Community Theatre, 313 N. Main St. World-renowned tenor Tito Merelli has signed on to play Otello at a Cleveland opera company in the fall of 1934. He arrives late and, through a set of crazy circumstances, passes out after mixing wine with a huge dose of tranquilizers. Believing that the divo is dead, the excitable opera manager taps his hapless assistant, an aspiring singer named Max, to suit up as the Moor and replace Merelli. Meanwhile, the tenor’s jealous wife, his ambitious female co-star, Max’s young girlfriend and the flirtatious head of the opera guild are on the scene fighting — sometimes literally — for the star’s attention. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 seniors, students and military, $11 each for groups of 10 or more and $10 for children 12 and younger. www.lcctnm.org. Also 8 p.m. Fridays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2; 8 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 20, 27 and Feb. 3; and 2 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 21, 28 and Feb. 4.

Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main St. No-Strings Theatre Company presents Anna Ziegler’s “Photograph 51,” directed by Ceil Herman. An intriguing portrait of British scientist Rosalind Franklin and her—often overlooked—role in the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure. This complex tale explores how Franklin, a smart, stubborn, and courageous woman, operated in a field dominated by men. A balance of the historical, romantic, and scientific, Photograph 51 is a touching human play of ideas. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 students and seniors and $10 all Thursday shows. https://no-strings.org. Also 8 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 2 and 9; 8 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3 and 10; 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Feb. 4 and 11; and 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8.

Join us for the opening reception of “Wendy Red Star: The Maniacs (We’re Not The Best, But We’re Better Than The Rest),” guest curated by Michelle Lanteri for the University Art Gallery at New Mexico State University. On view from January 26 through March 16, 2018, this site-specific exhibition will visually materialize and mesh memories of the past and present in Red Star’s investigation of her Apsáalooke (Crow) Indian father’s life in rock music, a site of familial importance and popular culture that has informed the artist’s practice and individual and collective identities as an Apsáalooke (Crow)-Irish American woman. Through photography, sound, sculpture, interviews, and a visual timeline, Red Star, as artist turned archivist, creates a multisensory, immersive installation for viewers to experience. Based in Portland, Oregon, Red Star earned a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of California, Los Angeles, alongside mentors Nancy Rubins, Mary Kelly, Catherine Opie, and the late Chris Burden. Red Star’s work has shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the CUE Art Foundation in New York, among other institutions. This event is free and open to the public
