When the Doña Ana Arts Council moved to their new offices in Mesilla, they gained something they hadn’t had before: the perfect space to hold receptions, art classes, and intimate musical performances. With the launch of the new Arts & Cultural Center, they began offering programs such as FEED YOUR MIND cultural seminars with local experts and most recently, Get ArtRageous! art classes, which have been filling up almost as soon as they’ve been made available.
Each Wednesday evening, a local expert teaches an art class on topics including pen and ink with watercolor, torn paper landscapes, painting flowers in acrylic, and small scale sculptures. Get ArtRageous! classes are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and include all materials and light refreshments. If the evening classes fill up, they may add an afternoon class as well.
The series kicked off with Sally Quillin teaching her filled-to-capacity class to paint Josefina’s Gate. Each student went home with a completed painting in hand after a fun evening enjoying art instruction, good company, and some snacks. It continued with Judy Licht teaching her students to paint on silk, and continues February 21 with Patricia Black teaching her students to paint and embellish gourds. On February 28, Quillin returns to teach pen and ink with watercolor techniques, with the evening class full and the only remaining slots being in an added afternoon class. The point: sign up early if you see a topic of interest.
Classes are currently scheduled through the end of May. “We’ve had a wonderful response from the community for these classes,” says Kathleen Albers, Executive Director of the Doña Ana Arts Council. “Both beginners and more experienced artists are finding a relaxed environment to experiment and leave with a finished work of art.”
All classes are on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, unless otherwise indicated, at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center.
