La Posta owners Tom and Jerean Hutchinson recently traveled down to the Patron Hacienda in Mexico to select the fifth installment of their Patron Select Barrel Program. To celebrate the newest member of their tequila family, La Posta held an over-the-top, five-course dinner centered around “The Process” by which their barrel found its way to the Mesilla Valley.

The evening kicked off with this introductory drink. Aguamiel, which translates to “sweet water,” is the name given to the fermented agave liquid enjoyed by Mexico’s earliest civilizations. While La Posta’s version is just a little more modern, this tasty treat is an homage to the ghosts of agave past. This drink got extra special touches with a rim of Zeke’s Mango Habanero sweet salt and a garnish of candied beets, mangoes, and pineapple.
1.5 oz Patron Roca Reposado
.75 oz Patron Citronge Mango liqueur
1 oz. lime juice
1 oz. purple beet syrup
.5 oz pineapple juice
This cocktail represents the earthy and herbaceous qualities that come from the iron rich soils where agave plants are grown. For the event, I topped this drink with lime, salt, cucumber, and dill foam, along with a dill sprig
1 oz. Patron Silver Tequila
.5 oz Patron Citronge Lime liqueur
.5 oz lime juice
1 oz. spiced tomato water
This beautiful drink was constructed in honor of the single flower that rises high above the agave, and only grows once the plant is fully matured and ready to be harvested. Make it special by topping with sparkling water and garnishing with edible flowers.
1 oz. Patron Reposado
.5 oz. Patron Citronge Orange liqueur
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
1 oz. fresh orange juice
1 oz. hibiscus infused agave nectar

The main event of the evening was a smoked version of La Posta’s most popular drink, La Patrona, which is made with their Barrel Select (#5) Patron Anejo. These cocktails were served in mini patron bottles with the cork on, in order to trap the cherry wood smoke on top of the liquid imparting a gorgeous visual appeal and added smoky flavor to this already delicious drink.
